Houston's Orchestra On Call is comprised of volunteer musicians  who bring live orchestral music into various health care settings throughout the Houston area. Concerts take place in spaces such as lobbies, lounges, dining rooms, auditoriums, event centers and gardens. Our repertoire ranges from classical to pops and seasonal.

Membership is open to musicians of all backgrounds and occupations who demonstrate interest in community building. Expected skill level is intermediate and up. HOOC is an adult orchestra and only in exceptional cases we accept students of 16 and 17 years of age.

We currently have open positions in the following sections of the orchestra:

  • Violin 1
  • Violin 2
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • Bass
  • Oboe
  • Bassoon
  • French Horn
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Percussion
  • Harp

Musicians interested in playing in other sections of the orchestra are encouraged to audition to be considered as a substitute for a section that might have a temporary need for musicians for a particular concert cycle.

Auditions for new players are held prior to the start of the season (mid-late August) and during the first few weeks of rehearsals throughout September. Announcements on audition dates are posted on the website and social media platforms months in advance. Musicians interested in joining the orchestra at a later time during the season may request an audition and join us at the first rehearsal of the subsequent concert cycle.

Interested musicians must bring two excerpts of their choice that best represent their musical level, preferably contrasting in tempo (fast and slow). The excerpts may be from the solo and/or orchestral repertoire and should be 3 to 5 minutes each (could be excerpts from larger pieces). There is no need to have the music memorized for the audition and no need to bring music stand unless otherwise indicated.

Results and chair placements are normally sent out by e-mail within a week after the audition.

Rehearsals take place on Mondays from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at DeBakey High School for Health Professions in the medical center area ( 2545 Pressler St, Houston, TX 77030 ). Parking is available in front of the building and is validated to all musicians.

Each concert cycle consists of approximately 10 to 12 rehearsals. All members are expected to attend as many rehearsals as possible as the success of an orchestra depends on everyone’s dedicated participation. However, we do understand that people may not be able to attend some rehearsals due to work, school-related commitments or sickness. For that reason, we do not have an attendance policy, but we expect musicians to make it to at least 70-75% of the rehearsals (including the dress rehearsal) and to all scheduled concerts.

To make the rehearsal experience a rewarding one and avoid unexpected absences, we ask musicians who are not able to attend a rehearsal to notify the conductor as soon as the conflict arises.

Musicians must bring their instrument and music to every rehearsal and concert.  Music is usually sent out electronically several weeks before the first rehearsal.

We provide music stands for rehearsals but musicians must bring their own stands for performances unless instructed otherwise.

Concerts are scheduled at the end of the fall semester (November/December) and spring semester (April/May) during the weekend. We usually present two concerts in the fall and two concerts in the spring. All members must attend all scheduled performances.

Concert attire: MEN: black suit, white shirt with tie and black shoes; WOMEN: all black (dress, or blouse, skirt or pants, and black shoes). Please, be aware that in special cases we may use a different attire appropriate for the occasion.
