Houston's Orchestra On Call brings together volunteer musicians from across the spectrum of students and professionals within the medical community. Through this collaboration, a mentoring relationship is forged between high school students from the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, college students from University of Texas Health, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Houston Pre-Medical College, Rice University Pre-Health program, Houston Community College and professionals in the Texas Medical Center and surrounding areas.
HOOC provides professional musical coaching for participating musicians – thus benefiting the musicians in their musical proficiency – as well as creating a structure that facilitates mentoring within the medical profession between medical and health care professionals and students pursuing education and training to become medical and health professionals. Therefore, HOOC has two populations that benefit from its activities: those engaged in the program as musicians, and those for whom the musicians plays.
As a result, HOOC enriches the education and experience of its volunteer musicians while enhancing the lives of its target audience.
